In a big swell, divers hanging onto the anchor rode for a deco or safety stop get jerked up & down as the boat rides the waves. Even in calm conditions, divers having to hold the rode because of a current find themselves bunched up at certain depths with other divers having to hang at the same depth. For some, the solution is a short line (4 - 10') attached to the rode allowing them to hang back out of the crowd, and smoothing out the ups & downs. The line is called a Jon line.

Now class - who knows what a gerry line is, and how it got it's name? (Hint - it's nothing to do with me.)
