Actually there's a bit more to the equation than just costs when considering the benefits of Nitrox and Helium or "Triox". One of the benefits of 02, besides being critical to support life, is that it creates a pressure gradient in the blood stream which effectively forces any absorbed nitrogen and/or helium out of the tissue compartments as you ascend. This is known as decompresion, and you do decompress every time you ascend from diving. The 02 accelerates that process.
So the combination of enriched oxygen(Nitrox), combined with helium to form "Triox", produces a gas for recreational usuage with the benefits of less nitrogen and No-Decompression times consistant with Nitrox tables. A very compelling combination.
