Mike, I'd like to add a couple of other advantages of useing a long hose. When deploying a lift bag(beside the HAlcyon type) I fing it much easier to put the back up it my mouth and use the long hose to fill the bag. This gives me much more freedom and less risk of screwing up the inflation.
Also as an instructor, wene doing drills with student I will also put the back-up in my mouth and with the long hose I can swing the donating reg around a diver with ease. Unlike your average dive programs (I never said PADI) our skills can become intense. But thats what has proven to help keep use alive.
