my mother was head of the YMCA aquatic staff in the South Santa Monica Bay area. I was one of the little beach rats running around and climbing the cliffs at Horseshoe Cove and other sites. Some of my most vivid early memories are of going to dive club meetings and beach dive events. I also remember how much work my mom had to put into her certification. She even had to glue her own wetsuit together. (Man, did I get in trouble when I snagged some neoprene for a "project"!) I honestly don't know if I would have put up with the harrassment and just plain dangerous "skill" tests that she did.

I do think though that hardcore divers are just as awesome today (and some just as crazy). What we need to do is get the MTV-style diving shows off the tube and get Sea Hunt back on. That way everyone will agree with us about just how cool we are!
