It can depend on the fish too. Some fish (like the White Fish) don't easily let divers get near enough for a pole spear.
You can get good slip tips for a pole spear too.
While pinning a big fish is imperitive when using a pole spear, what also counts is the impact. If a spear (from a gun or a pole) just penetrates through a fish, it may have a good grip on the fish, but it isn't really hurt and is going to really fight. It may tear loose. When using a pole on bigger fish, you want to slam the fish as hard as you can. The impact really takes the fight out of them.
