Safety Stops

I've been reading a bit of the history and theory behind making "safety stops". Some folks are now advocating the practice of making deep safety stops, and actually one recommends safety stops of at least a minute every ten feet.

So I'm curious to hear your opinions on safety stops. Looking for the whole range of folks, from the recreational folks to the tech folks (although please, safety stops as they apply to *recreational* dives within NDLs).
