DIR proponants claim that computers are a needless expense because we can compute our multi level NDL's "on the fly". For me, basically a mathematical idiot, it would require almost total continuous concentration on depth and time leaving me almost no time to focus on why I'm diving in the first place: to explore and grub for goodies on shipwrecks. I wouldn't enjoy doing those mental computation gymnastics even if I was capable. I dive for personal enjoyment and anything that adversely affects that enjoyment I refuse to get involved with. And isn't it a fact that a bottom timer and a watch are just as vulnerable to malfunction as a computer? Granted, there are sport and tech divers who definitely enjoy the challenge and discipline of DIR diving and more power to them. In a way, I envy their skills but I have no desire to emulate them. To each his own. Enjoy!
