Just got a message from Chuck Wright of the Catalina Concervancy Divers, and a phone call from Fiona who's the chair of the event, that the Avalon Clean-Up scheduled for this weekend has been canceled.
Seems there was a small hillside that gave way near the Mole, a sewer pipe broke, raw seawage spilled into the harbor, and it's unsafe for divers and swimmers to be in the water. It'll take a while (3-4 days at least) for the harbor to clean up and there's a good chance the Harbormaster will keep the place closed Saturday and Sunday to swimmers/divers.
They will discuss rescheduling options and will let everyone know.
