Richard, when people say "go to Avalon" b/c no local dive boats are going out, they mean hop a shuttle/ferry; it's a 1 hour to 75 min ride and you can leave from Dana Point, San Pedro, or Long Beach. Try this link: http://www.catalinaexpress.com/
