I remember one overnight trip i took to San Nicolas, it was socked in fog from the time i left Long beach.
The last thing i saw on the way out was the breakwater. I never saw another thing until i returned the next day!
I would not have made that trip without a GPS. I have a mounted unit plus two spare handhelds. The GPS really makes it possible to go anywhwer you want!
