To get that "Ack, I'm an idiot" feeling, I like to try the "pick stuff off the bottom game." In a ten ft pool, I hover just over the bottom and try to pick up light stuff (leaves, what ever is not too gross)without touching the bottom.
When I DM in the ocean,I put down a tag line for the students to hold onto in the surge. It's almost a guarantee that they'll be heading off in four different directions - all wrong one's. I try to keep them all on one side, so I can see their faces, and keep them moving to the instructors in some semblance of order. I always try to hover just above them to be able to make a quick grab and to keep out of the worst of the silt cloud endemic to OW classes.
