I guess I read something different in Mike's language. I understood Mike to mean:

1) Diving isn't for everybody

2) Treat students as intelligent beings and give them enough information about the hazards to make intelligent decisions about whether they should be involved.

3) Instructors should use professional judgement about suitability if problematic students violate point 2 above.

Mike also suggested allowing problematic students a free reteach provided they show some minimal apptitude and commitment to the process.

Sounds like common sense to me. Personally, I'd support a less tolerant approach to the one Mike articulated and stipulate a candidate should be comfortable in the water and have good water skills, be in good physical shape, demonstrate a true comprehension of diving physics and physiology and have an attitude and commitment to learn.

That's one reason I'm not an instructor.
