Catfish didn't bring up NDLs or DIR. These are Catfish's exact words...

"I for one think that california diving is very simple compaired to many other locations I have dived. Why would someone who dives in the gulfstream of Florida need to configure differently in our waters, other than a slight change in thermal protection? This is where George Irvine dives every weekend. In the warm waters off of Fort Lauderdale Florida. The technical stuff he does is only part time."

To say that California diving is very simple compared to Florida and only a slight thermal protection change is necessary is way off base. I agree that a 300' cliff is not the norm, but diving Big Sur or even Fort Bragg requires better diving skills and different tecniques than making a giant stride off the Great Escape at San Clemente. I believe that divers who go on trips to Catalina are slightly better divers on average than Florida salt water divers, but those who dive the Central Coast up through Oregon are even better than that.
