Be aware that the diving her eis way different than what you experienced in Hawaii. The cold water and limited visibility here make the diving harder. For your first several dives, make sure you have an experienced local buddy to help you get into the swing of local diving.

I suggest you hook up with Sand Eaters or South Coast divers to get a feel for the local considerations. Besides, you might meet a female diver who knows her stuff! While I agree that it is better to dive wth women (I almost always do with a wife and 4 daughters and my favorite non-family buddy being a woman, too), I suggest that you select buddies based on local dive experience and similar dive goals (exploration, hunting, photography, etc.)

Be a discriminating diver, but not be a sexist.
