Fish,

I've found that rudimentary sign language is more effective and convenient for rec diving. Most signs are common sense but you might want to agree on some specific signals with your buddy in advance.

Slates are useful for tech/cave divers, who occasionaly need to communicate critical and complex info. underwater. But for average rec dives, it seems to me more hassle than it's worth to get my buddy to cover over, read my slate and then have him/her write his/her reply.

If you feel the need, you might want to keep a small one in your BC pocket for emergency communications. I've also heard good things about Wetnotes but I haven't used them.

How's your OW course going?
