I like to hand people dive tables on the boat before the dive and make them "do" three dives with reasonable surface intervals and tell their ending pressure group. If they are rusty, they get a quick refresher and then I time them. The time is written down on my slate.

The at about 100 fsw, I have them do it again with a similar profile of three dives. The times should be better since they just practised less than ten minutes ago. They are usually 2-3 times slower. Those who get the correct answer on the surface usually get it right below. Those who get it wrong topside do not get any smarter at depth. I like this exercise since it is strictly thinking, and holding their place with a finger. They can't say that they were clumsy, but still clear thinking. They almost always are surprised because they do not feel narced, but the watch says otherwise.
