I don't understand what you mean by "further behind the eyes." The measuring point is the eye socket, not the eyes.

Look at the line drawing of a lobster at http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/historic/nmfs/figb0542.htm. You see the structure between the eyes that looks like an M? The two pointy things on top of the M are the horns. The eye socket is the bottom middle of the M.

For a head-on photo of a lobster, look at http://www.laups.org/cgray/lobster.htm. The eye socket is the U shaped thing (don't be deceived by the lighter-colored false eyes).

If the eye end of the DFG gauge were further back (tailward), then the gauge tip would have rested on the carapace itself. This would have been obvious in the photo.
