Dereck was from Fresno. Call Aquasports dive shop in Fresno (you can find the number at www.aquasports.com). Ask for Mike, he'll fill you in and can probably put you in touch with those who were there.
From what I understand Dereck was teaching an underwanter hunting course for his attorney, who put a loaded gun back on the kayak. It discharged.
But call and ask Mike. Dereck used to work for him.
