I've seen very friendly males near Avalon and at San Clemnente and very elusive ones off of Santa Cruz, frontside. I don't consider them suitable for sport hunting, but i wouldn't hesitate to shoot a smaller one for a meal, assuming they are abundant, and there is no future catastrophe like that which afflicted the abalone.

Really, rapacious slayer tho i am, i'd honestly rather hunt sheepshead with a camera or feed them at the underwater park. Maybe i'll grab one for ceviche one of these days.
