On a night dive during the last week of lobster season my buddy and I were approached by a 6 1/2-7' long sixgill shark in 7 feet of water (I checked) off south La Jolla. It swam to within 2 feet of my HID light (easy to count gill slits)before bolting off, the vis was 15-20 feet and it was around us for at least a minute. My buddy said it was as big as I am (not small). The free divers who saw it reported it to a friend as 10' long with a 3' wide head.
