I used to swim parallel to shore lined up with the sand ripples and insert my knife in a ripple. That old HUGE scubapro knife would plow through the sand just fine. Every now and then you would feel a clunk. WHen you do, flip the clam up and keep swimming. Your buddy swims behind and sorts. Big ones go in the bag till your limit is hit. The small ones are left for next year. Then your buddy tugs your fin and it is her turn to dig for her limit.

Last time we did it, both the wife and I limited out in <15 minutes at about 10-12 fsw. And they were HUGE clams.
