Renting a boat is almost always prohibitively expensive. It would almost certainly be cheaper to charter a sixpack. ... A lot less work too and you get the skipper's experience.
It is not the size of the boat that matters near as much as the experience of the skipper. If you're thinking of boating, go to Catalina first few times. A 20 ft. boat is fine for that.
An experienced skipper knows that the destination is tentative. You may have a goal, but the destination will be determined by weather and other conditions.
You might want to check out www.diver.net/seahunt/smalboat/d_small.htm for some thoughts on Channel Island boating. Also, a Coast Guard Auxilery Boating course would be recommended
Enjoy the diving, seahunt
