Karl, a couple of things.
First the domestic Scuba market is split between NAUI, PADI, and SSI. The last figures I saw had PADI with a little under half the market and NAUI and SSI splitting the rest evenly.
NAUI ITC’s are ran by NAUI course directors (they are few and far between). A NAUI course director can certify you as an Instructor (this is one of the differences between NAUI and PADI, NAUI trust their Course Directors).
The new guy is a PADI guy, who is having to be brought up to speed to become a NAUI course director (he owns a marketing company and has a good diving back ground, he should be a good addition).
You should know that paying your tuition doesn’t mean that you will pass a NAUI ITC.
I have helped with allot of ITC’s and lots of the ITC candidates did not pass (they were not ready).
If you are going to do this, you should get into an instructor prep program (ours are about 3 mouths long).
If you look at NAUI's Credo it says this: We believe and individual should not be qualified as a NAUI instructor unless those empowered to qualify the person would allow that person to teach their loved ones to dive. (are you ready for this)?
