I've never "Needed" to use mine but have from time to time. The people who really need to answer this are those like the guy off the Peace last weekend who went for a three hour surface drift. If I went floating in choppy waters for some time, I might just want that high drag extra thingy. Never foresaw needing my home owners insurance either, but last July when I came home from an overnight dive, and almost needed scuba to get into my house, I was glad I had it. The real question is, is being without an acceptable risk for you. Like to solo dive or not. For each of us the answer will be different, and for different reasons. Sometimes I dive w/o my snorkle, sometimes I dive solo, and in both cases I always weigh the options, the weather conditions, my health, and other factors. And I always listen to that little voice when it gives me reasons to stop whatever I'm doing, and maybe make change.
