Depends on species. For some fish, all that is mentioned is a daily bag limit.

But for lobster, abalone, and many other game, the DFG regulations specifically say the total amount that you can have in your possession at any given time. And by possession, they mean not only how many are in your goody bag, but also how many you have in your freezer at home.

Read the regs. And by the way, most recommendations I have read say not to store seafood in the freezer for more than 6 months. On top of that, most of the folks I know say: only eat fresh game, don't freeze it at all - just take what you are going to eat in the next few days.
