In the absense of SPG's, I am sure that J valves saved lives.
Remeber, I believe the diver is far more important than any gear. I'm the same with a J valve or SPG, though a SPG does more and so allows me more options.
Would a device that warned the diver at a certain tank pressure be useful, rather than relying on the diver to check? Maybe. Certainly in some cases, problems have arisen because the diver did not check their gauge. I think I can say I have never made that mistake, but many others have, so a minimum PSI warning device might be a good idea, especially for some divers.
