A Captain gains nothing by turning back. He still must pay his crew and for food that will spoil.
Captain Tim decided not to go to Santa Barbara the night before after talking with other boat captains that had just returned. He was going to try, and since people were already there he decided to try for Catalina in the morning, so we would still have a chance to dive.
He did not decide to return to port until after going out of the harbor and seeing the conditions first hand. He did everyone a favor by turning around. Instead of having a very crappy day, we paid nothing and he ate his costs. You should be thanking him instead of ridiculing him.
