John,
I have a slightly different take on this, since I used to fish with rod and reel quite a bit, and still do so on occasion. When you are fishing by rod and reel, especially with bait, you cannot completely control the species or size of the fish you catch.
It is possible to go over your limit for a specific type of fish, without going over your daily bag limit. Also it is my experience, that even if you release fish you catch, a large percentage of them will die from the trauma. Thus is it not better to see that a fish you caught is utilized for food, rather than released to die? I personally believe that you should respect the sea creatures one captures for food and ensure that they are utilized, if they go to waste that is a true tragedy.

Chris
