Give him a break. He was hoping for a good dive and for a buddy. Worst case should have been nothing more than a chase boat chasing him down-current. How many places can a diver go if he can't make it back to the boat? Its not rocket science.
The D/M managed to confuse even the Coasties. SAR at the wrong dive site. 5 hours adrift. Nobody deserves that.
