Sounds like you heard the mating calls of Plainfin Midshipmen (look it up), which would be right for this time of year.

There's a great story about boaters in tony marinas complaining about loud partying goin on and calling the cops only to discover that it was the sound of millions of Plainfin Midshipmen calling out for a good time.
