Actually, Kyle, Calif. offers a huge variety of sea life. You need to look for it, as it might be a kelpfish hidden against the giant kelp or the elusive giant black sea bass, huge white sea bass, or the hundreds of other life forms. You're aware Cal even has coral, aren't you? Its just different - magnigicant purple hydrocoral, pink cup and orange cup corals, sponges.

Easy snorkeling is sketchy, I have to admit, unless you have the stamina for some freediving...but that's half the fun (and a good workout). I enjoy the Carribean, but will never give up colder water diving....though 48 degrees in a wet suit is about all my bones can take these days...and not all that often.
