The Avalon was being used to salvage the Dominator. She ended up being one of at least two barges lost by Al Kiddman during his salvage work on the old Liberty ship. At the time, Avalon had been cut down and scooped out - basically an empty hull - with all equipment removed. Kiddman added the tracked crane on the stern to handle the big material he salvaged. He must have had a crew on the Dominator "hand-picking" as well, because there were many small brass items - coat hooks, cage lamps, small valves etc., that were to be found when I first began diving the Avalon.

I have seen a newspaper copy of a USCG photo of the Avalon in her cut-down mode, but have never been able to track down the original.

Stay wet.
