Because, Nate, molas are primarily cartilage, and the cruel, ignorant, sensless act of killing an unusually large and impressive creature was for no reason. Aside from having nearly no "meat" molas are one of the prime sources for the study of oceanic parisites. Ummmmmm!

MOLAS ARE NOT GOOD TO EAT.

Killing it was stupid, and I'm willing to bet there are a whole lot more stupid people than there are molas, hence to me at that point, the mola had far more value than all three of the ignorant bastards taking its life.

That said Blowing off their knees probably would have served the purpose.

Since you're asking questions like that, I take it you're a mola hunter yourself. Pretty tough hunting, huh? What sport! Nearly as difficult as shooting your dog, I guess...

And FYI I DO spearfish, but only what I need to eat, and then not that often. For me, it is a means to an end - one fish dinner - no stocking up the freezer.
