Growth on lobster

Some of the lobsters I caught the other day had this grayish spotty growth on their shell. It grows away from shell in pyramid type shell. Any idea what that is? (cancer ?) Also is it safe to consume lobster like that?
I will take a picture next of what I am talking about.
