On my recent trip to Cocos Island aboard the Sea Hunter I encountered many lobster on almost every dive. Because Cocos Island (Isla del Coco) is a reserve, most of the lobster were large. The average size was probably about 4 lbs. with ones in 10+ lb. range seen almost everyday.
The most common species of lobster was the Panulirus penicillatus or Red Spiny Lobster. The Species is also known as the Common Spiny Lobster, and has several other common names as well. The first thing I notice when I see this species is the blue ring at the base of the antennae. These lobster did not seem to be bothered much by conventional incandescent lights, but they seemed especially afraid of HID lights and the UV lights I use for fluorescence photography.
I thought you might want to see some of my pictures of Panulirus penicillatus so here they are;
