Bakersfield teacher dies in Catalina SCUBA accident

BAKERSFIELD - Students and staff at a local elementary school are mourning the passing of a beloved teacher.

Fifty-year-old Les Staats was a first grade teacher at McKinley Elementary School for 20-years.

On Saturday, he died during a scuba diving accident on Catalina Island.

The principal of the school, Dr. Ida Randall, said Staats’ free spirit will be missed.

Staats will be buried in Oregon.

A special memorial service will be held Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Stine Road in Bakersfield.
