Although it seems that he had a good heart and in his mind was convinced that he was doing the right thing, I believe that Timothy Treadwell was mentally ill. While it's true that he took some of the most unique and amazing wildlife footage ever shot, he broke laws designed to protect both bears and humans and jeapordized the safety of both. It's obvious that he probably understood bear behavior better than any other modern human otherwise he could not have lasted 13 seasons.

The impression that I got was that he was becoming less stable as time went on and basically committed suicide and manslaughter of his GF by staying too late in the season. At some deep unspoken level in his brain, maybe he did this because she had mentioned leaving him when they got back to civilization?

It would be interesting to explore the parallels of treadwell's work with those who are swimming uncaged with GWs.
