The HMS Shmervitz went down after a terrorist attack in 1977.

Apparently she was carrying a load of raw "Pop Rocks" from the quarry in San Quandary when a disgruntled Canadian threw a Diet Pepsi Light into the hold. He loathed gaseous confectionary.

The doomed ship sank in 15 minutes, then popped up to the surface again full of CO2. Then sank again. This was repeated 15 times before she permanently went to her watery resting place. This is where the phrase "Bobbing Shmervoo" comes from that refers to a diver the constantly returns to the surface.
