a nice "quickie" from lax is a 90 minute flight on alaska to loreto (baja california). the guy (bruce williams) that padi certified me a dozen years ago, opened up a nice dive outfit in loreto called dolphin dive. same name as the store he and his wife operated out of arcadia a while back.

we were there last year and really enjoyed it. bruce's divemaster and another boat captain will pick you up on the beach and take you out for a two tank day. lunch (homemade burritos...drool) is included and is prepared by the divemaster's wife. while the shoreline waters of loreto doesn't look much different than the south bay of l.a., the islands nearby offshore have carribean clear water on some of the shores. not spectacular but pretty decent diving overall. a few really nice restaurants in town, too.
