Diving accident kills California man

CAMBRIA, California — A man died while diving alone in kelp off Cambria State Beach.

Authorities told CDNN that rescuers responding to a 911 call found the body of Jesse King, 28, floating in a kelp bed near his overturned kayak.

They brought him to shore and started CPR but it was too late and he was pronounced dead.

King was wearing diving equipment that will be examined by investigators who believe he got caught in dense kelp and drowned.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Coroners said an autopsy has been scheduled for next Wednesday.

Colleagues and friends said King, a lifeguard, reserve harbor patrol officer and a former U.S. Coast Guard member, was a strong swimmer, a leader and a free spirit who loved the ocean.

"He was a great person," Harbor Operations Manager, Eric Endersby, told reporters. "A lot of people looked up to him, he was a leader among men and a good guy."
