I did my last unit of college out of Waves and Beaches. 1 unit of
geology (I needed one more science unit), digging holes in the
beach. I still have a copy. It's a book with good explanations
for the layman and enough math to keep us geeks happy too.

Bascom did a lot of the initial beach profile surveys using a
DUKW amphibious truck and a leadline (sonar doesn't work in the
bubbles). There's a great picture of him and the DUKW, surfing
in at Carmel River State Beach. The surf: 12'!

ISBN 0-385-14844-5 for the 1980 paperback. They are available used
from Amazon, query: Willard Bascom Waves and Beaches Somebody
wants $726 for the 1980 hardcover edition (which isn't even the
first edition)! Paperbacks are quite reasonable.
