Similar die offs of pelicans, other sea birds, sea lions, etc., occur in the Galapagos Islands during el Nino events. The warmer waters drive the normal food fish to deeper waters and the birds/mammals die.

This year's el Nino event in the southern hemisphere is affecting our local waters. While overfishing is an important factor, there are other causes to the lack of normal food stocks for the pelicans.
