There's oil all over under SoCal.
Long Beach probably had as much as Saudi Arabia at one time. There is more left there than most people would suspect.
Santa Barbara is famous for seepage. An oil company made a deal to capture ongoing natural seepage in exchange for some
accidental leakage from their rigs.
Captain Cook reportedly said that Santa Monica Bay was covered from horizon to horizon when he saw it.
It's a natural thing and most animals have adaptations. Birds don't because they can just immediately recolonize.
Through geologic time, leakages like what happened in the Gulf, just have occasionally happened. Humans just didn't know
and the Earth doesn't care. It is as fragile and dynamic as it is beautiful.
