Minimalism is good, but not limited to California diving. I carry all my dive gear in my carry on for warm water diving after experiencing an almost trip-ending baggage delay. Plastic backplate, 18# razer BC, mask, snorkel, reg (with octopus and SPG), trunks and fins. Never questioned by TSA either and light to carry. Rent tanks and weights at the destination.

As for an AAS, its for one's own safety for the situation when the paniced OOA diver (not necessarily your dive buddy) yanks your primary reg out of your mouth.

For true redundency, a decent sized pony or a Y yoke and full secondary set-up served well for solo diving.
