I'm an old guy who has been on or in the water most of my life. A Coast Guard Licensed skipper and a dive master. I think both views have something to be said. I would defend the right of the kid who took the octopus as long as he was going to us it for food. Taking it just to kill it because it was big would be wrong in my view. If a species is not threatened or protected it is fair game. Granted we need to attempt to preserve our environment, but we need to be realistic. It is kind of like the environmentalists who condemn killing any kind of animal. I couldn't personally pull the trigger on a deer. But I truly believe that hunters are a good thing because they actually have an interest in keeping the herd thriving.
