What Chuck is talking about is to re-program to AF-L/AE-L button to do AF-ON instead. So when you press that button it activates the AF. Half pressing the shutter release will no longer activate AF. Pretty sure you can do this on a D7000. My D200 and D800 have separate AF-ON buttons. This can be a good way to AF for macro. The usual technique is to press the button to get the focus close and then zone focus by moving the camera in and out until the focus on the subject "pops" in the viewfinder and then you release the shutter.

Especially if you think your problem is due to having trouble half-pressing the shutter release this is worth a try. You might like it better anyway.

The Sola focus lights are great. I have one. Just make sure to completely dry off the charging contacts before you plug it in or you'll get corrosion there.
