Phil: You might want to take the ferry from Long Beach to Catalina Island for some great diving. Water about 60-65. Clear and good depths and a few wrecks. A 7 mil suit works fine although in the summer I use a 3 or 5. Boat dives or dive Casino Point and walk into the water. Also, Laguna Beach south of LA about 40 minutes is a really nice place for walk-in shore dives. Many spots here. Check out the maps on these places. Plenty of gear and air available in both places.
