Be prepared for fairly cold water. Find some local web cams. It has been rough this year.
My best suggestion would be to try to get to Catalina and though I have written
about it a lot, for a new comer, I recommend a post from another out of state visitor
to give that perspective. Gillyweed_girl and scubadobadoo finally check out Catalina Island
They tell a great story and give a lot of useful information. It's a fun read. You enter the dive park
by walking down concrete stairs.
That's a plus. ... They did go in summer....

If you want more information about California ... and like reading, check out seahunt - for more
than you want to know about California Diving
. It's the best diving in the world.
Enjoy the diving, seahunt
The town of Avalon

You dive on the other side of the Casino

Teh park is diver friendly

Rental gear and fills nearby. Be sure to call the dive shop a few days ahead to
check that your plans make sense.

Entry at the park is not a boat, but it's OK. ... You can take dive boats from Avalon as well.

Swim in the kelp. Wave at the fishes

A little luck and you could have a very very memorable dive trip
