By the time you factor in the ferry, parking, food, tank rental, air fills and gear transport, a trip to Casino Point is about the same cost as a typical dive boat trip to Catalina.

On the plus side, at the park you get to pick your own schedule (depending on how the truck is managing to keep up with air fills); you know you will be diving in an area where you are likely to see bigger critters; and the park is available on weekdays when boat options are limited.

On the plus side for boats: the captains try to find best conditions available on the day; they will take you to as many as three different and interesting spots; you only have to haul your gear from the car to the boat and back; you are provided with a steady stream of refreshments throughout the day; you usually have a bunk to take a nap in before/after diving; there's a trained DM on board to supervise diving and provide assistance if needed.

All in all, it seems to me that the dive boats provide a much better value for money. I think we are lucky to have a fleet of solid boats available to dive from and we should patronize them as much as possible. Now that the dive park is being overrun with cruise ship tourists and snorkelers, it just makes even more sense.
