Potentials

This is where there must be a pause. What has this book
described and why? It has attempted to describe humans, the
problems of a changing ecology and some of the possible responses
to these changes. Though a genetic problem and a possible
solution have been mentioned, it has been emphasized that human
survival and growth is based on knowledge and belief as much as
genetics. Some beliefs and a few belief sets are described. So why
is this a useful stopping point? For one thing, enough has been
said to define all of the most important aspects of survival
strategy, in any situation. That is morality. If you do not think
so, look a little further, but first... This is meant to be the
relevant conclusion to this book. There is more to write, but it
is just information to fill in some of the pieces. So this
ending, like the beginning, must be written for different people.
Partly as a reflection of nature, the book has been written very
conservatively, but even biologically, humans have been breaking
precedence. Still, survival, is the essence of conservatism. In
any case, this pause is the time to discuss real human potential
in non-conservative terms. The intent is, that the patterns in
this book will enable a person to figure out some of the
consequences of innovation and when it is desirable or not. So it
is time to consider some of the more interesting and long range
potentials and needs of humans. Then, as promised, it will be
explained why ( another point of view ) a few basic belief sets,
define the most critical elements of survival strategy.

                         Potentials
1,???
What are human potentials? If we find a reason why, how far
can we go? What is far? Realistically, this book is written for
the time frame within which we are utilizing presently existent
potentials. It speaks about a specie surviving over geological
ages, but far sooner than that we reach the limits of both
knowledge and imagination. That is the business of speculative
science writers and social fiction writers, as philosophy has
become to be known. Consequently it is best to be brief and
only mention a few of this genre of long range potentials.
The first question is about our energy source. Our
technology is already capable of producing just about anything we
want, .. if there is an adequate energy supply. So what kind of
clean energy technology can we muster and what is the consequence
of its nature. If it is complex enough to require centralization,
like a nuclear plant, the consequence will be quite different
than if it is simple and dispersed like solar cells. Energetics
is fundamentally determinate to any species nature. It will
basically determine our social, political, economic and genetic
development.
Another factor will be our utilization of automation. This
is critical because occupation, work, is what has determined most
of our character, up to this point.
